Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

Formed in 1992 in Southern California, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy merges traditional swing band sounds with today’s rock. Many members of the band grew up in Southern California, and started playing together in high school all-star bands and later in college at Cal State Northridge. After first gaining mainstream popularity with their breakthrough performance in the film Swingers, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has gone on to become one of the most popular touring bands on the road today.

As committed to their music as the swing era lifestyle, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is not only renown for their impeccable performances, but for their classic suit and fedora styling and gentlemanly demeanor. Carrying on the tradition of the legendary big bands and orchestras, their fans span generations, filling concert halls around the country for shows that transport them back to the glamour and optimism of the big band era.

In August 2004, after more than a decade of nearly non-stop touring, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy released a live concert CD and bonus DVD, capturing their high-spirited, always fun, and electrifying stage show. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy Live features songs from the band’s previous three albums and spans the past 10 years of their career.

Where did their name come from? In 1989, Scotty Morris decided to launch a 3-piece jazz, blues and swing combo. The trio included drummer Kurt Sodergren and was named Big Bad Voodoo Daddy after a fateful meeting with blues guitar legend Albert Collins at one of his concerts. “He signed my poster ‘To Scotty, the Big Bad Voodoo Daddy,’” Morris explains. “I thought it was the coolest name I ever heard on one of the coolest musical nights I ever had. So when it came time to name this band, I didn’t really have a choice. I felt like it was handed down to me.” In the years that followed, Morris and Sodergren formed the rest of the band which includes Dirk Shumaker on string bass, Andy Rowley on saxophone, Glen ‘The Kid’ Marhevka on trumpet, Karl Hunter on saxophone and clarinet, and Joshua Levy on piano.
