The Shirley Jones story is the quintessential American Cinderella Dream.  As the talented youngest member of her Smithton, Pennsylvania choir, Shirley demonstrated her talent at the age of six.  Shirley grew up to win the Miss Pittsburgh Beauty Pageant and soon found her way to New York after high school graduation.

At an audition as a replacement in the chorus of “South Pacific,” Shirley was discovered by Rogers and Hammerstein.  Her first stage appearance quickly followed and R & H arranged for a movie audition for Shirley as Laurey in “Oklahoma” opposite Gordon MacRae, which she landed, and Gordon also costarred with Shirley in “Carousel.”

Many movies followed, such as “The Courtship of Eddie's Father,” “April Love,” and “Bedtime Story.”  In 1960, Shirley won the Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for her powerful portrayal opposite Burt Lancaster in “Elmer Gantry.”   One of Shirley's proudest achievements as Marion in “The Music Man” has been hailed as one of Columbia's most successful films.

Shirley and “The Partridge Family” enjoyed a large television audience for four years.   Two Emmy nominations came her way for her dramatic work in “Silent Night, Lonely Night” and “There were Times, Dear.”   Shirley made guest appearances with many variety shows, headlined in Las Vegas, returned to legitimate theater and, over the last decade, has also returned to films.

Shirley and her husband, TV producer Marty Ingels, live in the San Bernardino mountains and travel often with their active careers and philanthropic interests.   Visit www.shirleyjones.com.

The Arrowhead Arts Association is honored to welcome Shirley Jones as the featured entertainer for its 25th Anniversary Gala, “Silver Lights of Broadway” on May 30, 2009.
